Sainte Foy, Savoie, France – considered an undiscovered treasure, located amongst some of the biggest ski areas in France, offering some great advanced and off-piste skiing.
It is a local secret that Sainte Foy en Tarentaise is the location where knowledgeable locals and ski professionals from Val d Isere seek refuge from the crowds and on days when the powder has been plundered in more well known areas. Sainte Foy offers north facing off-piste slopes that are known for their snow consistency and lack of crowds.
The ski area at Sainte Foy is small, with few lifts and little in the way of beginner and only slightly more intermediate ski pistes. That does little to detract from the fact that Sainte Foy is a fantastic location for off-piste skiing, with great powder (weather permitting) both in the trees and on the exposed north facing slopes, including off-piste runs such as Le Monal or down from Fogliettaz. Sainte Foy is a traditional alpine village and has only been developed in the last couple of decades, with great architecture and natural surroundings. Sainte Foy is compact and very different from the nearby resorts of Val d Isere, Tignes, La Plagne and Les Arcs, and although the amenities are more limited than its neighbours, Sainte Foy has authentic regional hospitality on offer.
The ski area at Sainte Foy has a descent top height of over 2600m and the off-piste skiing is easily accessed from the few lifts. Developments are underway in Sainte Foy with snowmaking and new ski pistes adding to the fantastic off-piste skiing. The village of Sainte Foy is also seeing an expansion, with more accommodation being added, although sensitively to preserve the charming wood and stone of Sainte Foy. |
